Betty

Visit to the Family Doctor

Image

Betty is a 14 year old girl who is brought to you, her family doctor, by her mother who is upset at having caught Betty having sex with her boyfriend when she came home early from work yesterday.

Betty tells you that this is the first time she’s ever had intercourse and she has been dating Brendan for 3 months.  Her mother is worried about pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.  Betty has never used any form of contraception and admits that they didn’t use a condom though she thinks that she probably should have.

1.Betty’s mother asks you if they can do anything to prevent her from getting pregnant. You suggest:
Plan B; then start an oral contraceptive pill for long-term contraception
Insert an IUD

Betty’s mom asks you if 14 is too young to be having sex and what impact this will have on her future.
